Dr Lawani worked briefly as a secondary school English Language teacher in both Ogun and Ondo States before resigning her appointment to take a carrier as a Lecturer in the Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, one of the foremost Federal Government Colleges of Education in Nigeria. She served in the College for nine (9) years before transferring her service to the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) in year 2000.

Dr Margaret Lawani has a wide experience in teaching and research. Over the years, she has garnered professional, administrative and technical experience in the areas of curriculum development, language development and book development. She has published many articles in learned journals and contributed chapters to many reputable books in the areas of Language, Literature, Language Education and Curriculum development. Dr Lawani has attended and participated in over 40 conferences and workshops within and outside the Country.

She served as the desk officer of the Council in a number of partnership projects between NERDC and other organisations/agencies of government in the Country. Some of the organisations/agencies are: FRSC, ICPC, CBN, NAPTIP, CPC and NAFDAC.

She has also served efficiently as the coordinator of a number of meetings/conferences/workshops organised within and outside the Council. In addition to these, she is a member of a number of committees set up by the Council.

In 2011, she was nominated as the Best Academic Staff of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Abuja for the year. The award which was the first ever in the history of the Council was granted to her in June 2012.

Dr Lawani is a member of many professional organisations. Some of these are:

  • Reading Association of Nigeria (RAN);
  • National Association of Teachers of English in Colleges of Education and Polytechnic (NATECEP);
  • Association of Women in Colleges of Education;
  • Curriculum Organization of Nigeria (CON);
  • National Association of Educational Researchers and Evaluators (NAERE);
  • Nigerian Primary and Teacher Education Association (NPTEA); and
  • Forum for African Women Educationists Nigeria (FAWAEN).

Dr Lawani enjoys cooking, reading, writing and listening to music, especially, country music as well as gospel songs. She is happily married with children.
